October 2017 Club Report To SLOCDP

October 2017 Club Report to SLOCDP

One of the things we voted to do at the SLO County Democratic Party recently was to make all reports to the Central Committee written. This way we can spend our valuable meeting time working on party business and advancing our values. Below is our club’s October report to the committee.

  • Four members of SLO County Progressives (along with coalition partner members) met with Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham on September 25th to lobby him to support SB562 – The Healthy California Act.
    • Other members rallied outside his offices in a Single-Payer Healthcare Celebration of Democracy Rally.
    • The meeting was productive with the Assemblyman saying he was in “data collection mode”.
    • We presented about the need for the bill and its effects on families, the proposed financing of the bill, etc.
    • Cunningham asked several questions throughout:
      • Would doctors and hospitals stay private or would they become public employees like Britain’s NHS?
        • Answer: Doctors and hospitals would stay private. SB562 only impacts insurance.
      • Why did Senate staff analysis say the bill would cost $400 Billion and the Pollin Study says $330 Billion?
        • Answer: Senate staff were not allowed to consider savings for efficiency that is created by single-payer, etc. They noted that in their analysis. $330 Billion is the correct number.
      • There was info floating around that the bill would institute a payroll tax, is that no longer the plan?
        • Correct, the bill’s proponents are pushing for the financing in the Pollin study which would NOT include a payroll tax.
    • Overall, Cunningham seemed open and interested to learning about the bill. Says the following items will guide his decision:
      • Effects on state budget – Does not want to see deficit spending.
      • Effects on small business.
      • Effects of displacement of health insurance workers.
      • Effects on quality of care.
      • Rationing of care issues.
    • Going forward SB562 supporters should focus on those concerns when lobbying the assemblyman.
  • The SLO County Progressives held our September General Meeting on September 28th at the SLO Guild Hall.
    • Themed as “Leveraging our Local Movement to WIN Elections” we heard from:
      • SLO County Progressives Election Group
      • SLO County Progressives Oceano Task Force
      • SLOCDP Go Team
    • There was a Q&A session and an opportunity for members to sign-up to volunteer.
    • We also heard from Jimmy Paulding, candidate for 4th District Supervisor.
  • Our North County Regional Meeting was held on October 3rd in Atascadero where they heard elections related presentations.
  • On October 14th and 15th SLO County Progressives will host canvass events for SB562 in Templeton and Morro Bay, respectively.
  • On October 21st SLO County Progressives will partner with the Atascadero Democratic Club and the Paso Robles Democratic Club to have a booth at Colony Days.
  • Our next General Meeting is October 26th at 6pm at the SLO Guild Hall.
